For obvious reasons, I don't plan on writing much about the Teal half of Teal&Green Sports since there isn't much Teal talk to get into. If and only if there is an NHL season I'll have the keyboard ready. But another NHL lockout means I'm just not going to bother getting into details. I officially have hockey apathy right now. (And a couple hours after I posted this did I finally bother to see the NHL has officially banged the first couple weeks of regular season games. Just terrible.).
That said, I did make it a doubleheader yesterday and after going to the A's game I went with my family to check out the first-ever game of the ECHL's newest franchise, the San Francisco Bulls. And they are affiliated with the Sharks, though don't expect many of San Jose's top or even middling prospects to ever set skate onto the Cow Palace ice, which in itself is something relevant given the nostalgia of the old barn being the Sharks' first home as an infant organization.
The preseason contest with the Stockton Thunder, who won the game 5-4 in overtime, was a bit of a letdown from the emotional atmosphere of the Coliseum and the baseball game played earlier in the day. But I do love hockey even though I'm bitter and disillusioned with the NHL right now, and it was nice to see some live-action puck. The Bulls also have what the Sharks don't, and that's ice girls, but if they ever play again this season I won't hold that against S.J. Sharkie.
I won't give much of an opinion on the Bulls' gameday experience because they'll need a larger sample size of games to be fairly analyzed. But I did approve of their choices of what music to blast during stoppages in play, so that will be a plus for those attending Bulls' games at the Cow Palace. I'm not sure if uppity San Francisco screams hockey market like San Jose has embraced the sport. But as a hockey fan I hope S.F. fans give the Bulls a chance, and it certainly should help their cause in year one if the Sharks' season continues to be delayed, if not canceled.
